Gondwana Gold of Northeast Queensland:

Mineralization Styles, Sources, and Structural Inheritance

Duration

4 day

Start Point and End Point: Townsville, QLD, Australia

Leaders

  • Hugo Serra (Economic Geology Research Centre, James Cook University)
  • Daniel Wiemer (Economic Geology Research Centre, James Cook University)
  • Vladimir Lisitsin (Minerals Geoscience, Geological Survey of Queensland)
  • Gregg Morrison (Exploration Consultant)

Dates

Pre-conference field trip: 23-26 August 2027

Experience a 4-day field trip that will take you to the fascinating savannah–outback of northeast Queensland, where you will engage with our expert team and explore a range of gold mineralisation styles, including orogenic, intrusion-related and epithermal systems.

This field trip will guide you through (i) the crustal continuum of gold deposits, (ii) their styles, expressions, alteration assemblages and mineralogy, and (iii) the timing of mineralisation within the changing geodynamic evolution of northeast Queensland.

Participants will visit host rocks, mineralised and hydrothermal alteration zones, key deposit structures, drill core and hand specimens, including mine visits to the world-class Ravenswood deposit, Pajingo and the Charters Towers Goldfield. With insights from the field trip leaders, participants will explore how these deposits formed and how similar systems can be targeted in exploration.

Join us in northeast Queensland for a field-based journey through the gold systems of the eastern Gondwanan margin.
