Pre-conference fieldtrips: 25–29 August 2027
This fieldtrip provides an opportunity to visit world-class lithium pegmatite deposits of the Archean North Pilbara Craton, one of the most significant hard-rock lithium provinces globally. The excursion will focus on giant spodumene-bearing pegmatites, including the Pilgangoora deposit, as well as a range of LCT and ceramic pegmatites developed along major structural corridors such as the Tabba Tabba shear zone. Participants will examine the geological framework of these deposits, including structural controls, granite–greenstone relationships, pegmatite zoning, and regional fertility indicators.
The program includes detailed site visits to active and historical pegmatite operations, with opportunities to view open pits, mineralised pegmatite exposures, and selected sampling localities where permitted. Additional stops will place the pegmatites in their broader tectonic, magmatic, and lithospheric context, highlighting why the Pilbara represents a globally significant lithium province. The fieldtrip is designed to be logistically efficient, based out of Port Hedland, while still providing a comprehensive overview of the region’s geology, mineral systems, and mining infrastructure. It will appeal to both academic and industry geoscientists interested in pegmatite evolution, lithium exploration, and critical mineral supply.
