Duration

7 days

Start and End Points: Hobart, Tasmania

Leaders

  • Lejun Zhang, CODES
  • Owen Missen, CODES
  • Jessica Stromberg, CSIRO

Dates

Post-conference fieldtrip: 3 – 9 September 2027

This field trip will showcase the geological history and economic geology of Tasmania, providing participants with an introduction to Tasmania's diverse mineral systems including polymetallic VHMS, granite-related Sn-W, and critical and strategic metals, and their geological environments of formation.

Participants will visit active mine sites, exploration projects, and key field exposures to gain an in-depth understanding of Tasmania's geological and metallogenic evolution, and new insights into the genesis of its diverse mineral resources. This will involve viewing of drill core, and discussion on current exploration strategies for an array of deposit types. Major sites of interest include the Rosebery polymetallic VHMS deposit, Renison tin mine, Dolphin W skarn, Deep Leads REE ionic clay deposit, Avebury Ni mine, Savage River Fe deposit and Mt Lyell Cu mine, Kara magnetite-scheelite mine, and the Prospect ridge magnesite deposit.

It will also include transects through magmatic-hydrothermal transition texture exposures at Binalong Bay, Freycinet National Park and Trial harbour to provide insights into the origins of granite-related Sn-W deposits, and sections through submarine Cambrian volcanic successions to illustrate key processes in the origins of VHMS deposits.
